Bold black Lokta pages with deckled edges, bound in living bark tradition.
This A4 landscape journal is crafted for expressive work with depth and structure. Inside are 40 thick black Lokta pages, handmade from the sustainably harvested bark of the Daphne plant in the Himalayan foothills. Lokta is renowned for its remarkable strength, natural resilience to insects and humidity, and its softly fibrous texture. Each sheet is hand-pulled and sun-dried, creating gently deckled edges and subtle tonal variations across the surface.
Interleaving slits are integrated between sections to prevent bulging, making it ideal for collage, layered media, and dimensional work.
The cover is wrapped in authentic Amate paper — a bark-based paper rooted in over 3,000 years of Mesoamerican tradition, still handmade today using soaked and beaten tree fibres. Its organic patterns and earthy tones echo the raw beauty within.
Bound with exposed Coptic stitching, the journal opens completely flat while celebrating visible craftsmanship.

COVER MATERIAL: Rooted in over 3,000 years of Mesoamerican tradition, each sheet of Amate paper is handmade from sun-dried bark, revealing soft textures, swirling natural fibres, and a strength once prized by Maya and Aztec artisans. Its earthy tones, organic patterns, and subtle variations in weight and colour celebrate the craft kept alive by Otomi makers—offering a beautifully authentic canvas that carries history in every fibre.
SUPPORT PAPER: Made on an original 19th-century papermaking machine from a now-closed mill, this paper brings character and quiet history to each album. A thoughtful mix of paper weights is used throughout, creating strength and visual interest while keeping the album comfortable to handle — never overly chunky. Subtle inclusions add depth without distracting from your photographs.

Style: COPTIC BINDING
Fact: Coptic binding is an ancient 2nd-century AD technique from early Christian Egypt, considered one of the earliest true codex forms. It features an exposed spine with decorative chain-stitch sewing, uses no glue, and relies entirely on thread for strength. This allows the book to open completely flat, even back on itself, making it ideal for sketchbooks and artist journals. The spine is traditionally left exposed, but can be covered, the sewing hidden or exposed; the rhythmic sewing pattern provides both structure and beauty.
