Bound using classic medieval raised cord techniques, the album features ridges along the spine and a hand-sewn headband. Both cover and inside pages are thick Lokta paper, sustainably handmade by a Fairtrade women’s community in Nepal, creating a durable yet soft tactile experience. Made in Leitrim, this album is ready to use, with flexibility for custom sizes or covers if desired.

COVER MATERIAL: Handcrafted from sustainably harvested Daphne bark, Lokta paper carries a thousand year legacy in its soft, textured surface—brought to life through traditional batik, woodblock prints, and sun dried sheets that honour Nepal’s mountain artisans. Each piece celebrates natural variation in colour, weight, and pattern, offering a beautifully durable, eco conscious canvas that supports rural communities and preserves a timeless craft.

- ARTISANAL PAPER: Made on an original 19th-century papermaking machine from a now-closed mill, this paper brings character and quiet history to each album. A thoughtful mix of paper weights is used throughout, creating strength and visual interest while keeping the album comfortable to handle — never overly chunky. Subtle inclusions add depth without distracting from your photographs.

- 21st CENTURY PAPER: A modern, laid-textured paper in 250–300gsm, chosen for its clean structure and reliable support. Style: RAISED BAND BINDING

Fact: Raised bands are most closely associated with medieval bindings of the 14th–15th centuries, though sewn supports appeared as early as the 8th century. Thick cords or leather thongs were sewn into the textblock to secure heavy oak boards, with leather carefully molded over them to form the distinctive raised profile. While originally structural, the visual appeal of raised bands endured even after they restricted hinge movement. Today, the look is often recreated using glued, flexible faux bands, preserving the historic character without the original constraints.
